Exercise Requirements:
The striking Afghan Hound needs plenty of exercise. This dog was bred to run and jump, and their physical and mental health will benefit if they get a chance to show off their speed every day. Recalls can be very difficult, however, so it is important that they are only allowed off leash in safe areas. An hour of walking on leash, plus a half hour of active free play will keep these dogs in great condition.
Mess Factor:
The long and silky coat can be kept under control with regular brushing, but Afghan Hounds do shed, particularly when they are losing their puppy coat.
Barking and Volume:
With a silhouette like this, it’s no surprise that Afghan Hounds are happy to be seen and not heard.
Training Requirements:
The biggest challenge in training an Afghan Hound is establishing consistent recalls. It’s a wise idea to invest in some professional training for safety’s sake.
Ongoing Costs:
Health Factors: The breed is quite healthy, although they are mildly susceptible to cataracts as they age. *A responsible breeder can help minimize the risk of genetic disorders.
Grooming: If you are not diligent about grooming at home, the occasional visit to the salon may be required to keep the Afghan’s coat in shape.
Training: Some professional training is recommended.
Grooming Requirements:
The Afghan Hound’s glamorous coat does require a fair amount of upkeep, usually a thorough brushing every two to three days.
Kid Compatibility:
Afghan Hounds are usually gentle with children, but they may not be particularly interested in romping with them as these dogs are very independent and sensitive.
Longevity:
12-14 years.
Friendliness Towards Animals:
Afghan Hounds were bred to hunt smaller animals and they will give chase when out in the open. Interestingly, they can co-exist peacefully inside the house. They are friendly but somewhat reserved when meeting new dogs.
Friendliness Towards People:
Afghan Hounds are not particularly affectionate with even their favorite people, so it is no surprise that they aren’t all that pumped to meet strangers. Some can be timid, so careful socialization is important.
BE PREPARED FOR: An elegant, catlike creature who may not be interested in giving you the adoration you’re looking for at the end of a long day.
